Austin RoadKill Ride, August 3, 2003
This ride was
planned to the Nth detail by our intrepid GERP, who decided
to reach new legendary heights in RoadKill folklore by showing up for a 32 mile
ride sans shoes and helmet. Fearing enough damage had already been done to his
cerebrum (heaven only knows why helmets aren't required on the golf course!),
proper headgear was quickly obtained. Since he had stoker Jimmy Hudson to provide
whatever horsepower his GERPship would lack because of improper footgear, it
was decided to scientifically observe how one would ride such a challenging
ride in sandals. Needless to say, we are impressed.
The
Voice of GERP Speaketh:
Those were some really great suggestions about rides, but like the
people of Iraq it seems that we are not quite ready for democracy yet.
Therefore, the shadowy and mysterious Roadkill powers that be have
determined the official Roadkill ride route for next Sunday morning and
have asked me to pass it on. They have determined in their wisdom that
in honor of the Tour riders who have just finished riding over two
thousand miles in the last three weeks, and since the monthly dinner is
next Sunday and such an event should actually have a bicycle ride or two
to talk over that Sunday's official ride will have the official
traditional starting point. That's right, next Sunday Roadkill will
start from the famous Buda convenience store at 8. More serious riders
can begin at Bowie at seven if they wish. The ride will not however
follow the traditional route. No. We will ride south out of Buda on
2770, the old, old route, and ride right on past the high school without
stopping. The stop will be just past at the stop sign at 150 where we
will stop at that convenience store. At this point, are you ready for
this?, we will turn right! We will ride west on 150 the next convenience
store where we will stop again. We will then turn right again staying on
150 and ride all the way into Driftwood. We will go through Driftwood
and stop at the intersection of 1826. After regrouping there we will
ride east on 1826 past the Salt Lick and take another right on to 967.
967 takes us back into Buda. The distance is a little less than the 33
mile Salt Lick route but a little bit hillier so should be about the
same intensity. One good thing is that every time you get to a fairly
big road you turn right and so should be a little easier to understand
than last time. We will make an effort to keep the ride going a little
better than last time. I don't really know what this will mean, but we
will try. If however, we get spread out all over the countryside like
last time, well we'll have just that much more to talk over at dinner.

The Gerp
